jay link

Jay Link is the singer for LA Based Hard Rock Band DEATH & TAXES – but he’s so much more than “just” a singer/songwriter! He’s also an Indie Actor, Comedian, a Twitter Celebrity and just recently a host for ROCK Music on TODHD – a new branded television broadcast community.

Jay was also in Tuff Luck – a band that gained notoriety playing for the Jerry Lewis Telethon in the 80′s and he has been in several films as an extra. Jay is well loved by his fans and friends – and is a great guy – not just when he’s performing – but in the industry.

Celebrity himself and friend to more celebrities than you can shake a stick at – ImpulseMagazine is proud to have the opportunity to have a brief moment in time with JAY LINK!

Thanks Jay for joining us here at ImpulseMagazine, we’re gonna ask you a few questions… so kick back… and we’ll get right to it….

1)      Let’s start with the beginning – what got you into music?

I came from a musical family.

My dad loved to sing and dance and my grandmother played the Piano & Harp.

I was about 14 when I started writing some simple songs.

Grew up Listening to Elvis, The Beatles etc..

My parents gave me a few guitar lessons. I was actually a student of Harry Grebb in Chicago, his son Marty was a well known  musician in the Buckingham’s back then.

My first few songs all had the same chords C am F & G…  But I finally progressed.

2)    Currently Death and Taxes is Los Angeles Based – are you guys doing any shows or tours?

Yes. We are going out later this summer , first doing some local LA shows & Vegas, Phoenix etc..

Then across the USA.There are also plans for a UK tour, Australia, Brazil, and we would love to play in Canada

3)    Tell us about your start with Death and Taxes – who is in the band with you – and tell us a little bit about them:

I am blessed to have some amazing and talented Band Members. We are like family.

Well, my guitarist Michael and I ARE family.

I married his sister Pam in 1981 and had 3 children,so Michael is their Uncle. Michael is one of the most talented and creative Guitarists I have ever come across.I met him in 1981 and we immediately hit it off,and started playing together and writing songs.

We were in a band called Rage, and we then formed Tuff Luck, which was the California version of my Original Chicago band formed in 1977.

Dave Starkey introduced me to Michael in California. So Dave, a very talented Bass player has been with me since 1981 also. After about 1985 we went our separate ways, and Michael went on to Christian Metal Rockers -  Holy Soldier -  who did very well for many years.

Dave Joined TNT and various bands, and I raised my kids and went into FM radio in the 90′s.

We have always been close and kept in touch… so Dave, Michael and I got together for a songwriting session in 2003, and wrote and recorded 4 songs in 4 days…  just to see if the Magic of the 80′s was still there.

We enlisted the help of our good friend Eric Fahlborg a Grammy nominated Engineer and producer to record and mix the song and our good friend Paul Monroe of XYZ fame came in and played the drums on that session.

We got some amazing results and accolades with that 4 song EP and our new CD “Inevitable” is a continuation of that process.

4)    You’ve got a brand  new CD  coming out like – right this instant – where can fans listen to a little bit of it – and pre-order or purchase it?

Our new CD “Inevitable” has been delayed by about 12 weeks,

but we are looking at a late August release date. (Sorry it really is almost done! Just the final 4 songs need to be done.)

5)     You recently started hosting a really awesome House of Madness which airs on the Notalgia channel run by Gary Arbaugh or sometimes other channels over on TODHD a part of  KelseyLive.com – we’ve watched you – and your fans are phenomenally awesome – can you tell us what you do on that show? We heard that you’re going to be giving away PRIZES – is that true?

Yes, in the coming weeks and months,we will be giving away CD’s , T-Shirts, and other prizes, including my good friend Shelly from twitter will be giving away some beautiful jewelry pieces.

6)     You are friends to a lot of people in the Entertainment Industry – and you regularly guest them on your House of Madness show on http://todhd.com (TODHD) – Can you give our readers a little glimpse of a few of the Celebrities you have had or you plan on having on your show?

Past Guests have included: Taylor Dayne, Alicia Jacobs, Lydia Cornell, David Faustino and many up and coming musical guests.

We will be have many celeb & musical guests calling into too,s uch as Virginia Madsen, Mariel Hemingway, Kathy Ireland, David Faustino, Mena Suvari, Lita Ford, Dee Snider,Taylor Dayne and many more…

7)    You’ve become something of a Twitter Phenomena – and have quite a family started on Twitter. Would you like to give a shout out to your Twitter friends?

Wow! Giving a shout out to my small group of 400 close friends would take forever, but I want to say I love each and every one of my twitter family and friends, and without their love and support, this CD would have NEVER been completed.

They are an amazing group of people, and I love them with all my heart!

8)     What do you see in the future for Death and Taxes – after this CD goes wild? More  shows?

We are so very blessed at our ages to still be doing the thing we love most in life – which is our music.

We want to do a new CD as soon as possible.

Get out and tour for the next few years, and get to meet as many of our friends an fans we possibly can.

We would also like to do some larger shows for  children and other charities to give back to our communities!

9)   You’ve played in a couple of movies – tell us a little bit about them and do you think you’re destined to do more acting?

Absolutely. I am a ham at heart, and I love acting.

It is so different than playing live music, but also fun and a challenge.

I started out as an extra in a few films and my first small role was in 2000 in a Movie called Shark 2000 on DVD.
I played the town bully named “Bubba” who bullied the town drunk.  Had a blast.

My second feature film is called “50 ways to Kill Your Lover. It is a Dark Comedy/Horror film from the demented mind of filmmaker  Bill Alexander.

I play “The Landlord” which started out as a cameo but was expanded… and let’s just say I chew up the scenery in this amazing trainwreck of a movie.

The DVD “50 Ways to Kill Your Lover”  available near you (either now when the article comes out – or soon).

10)    Love the long hair man – your fans love you.  So – could you give any of your fans a word of advice on how to get into the Music Industry or the Entertainment Industry?

First and foremost ,you have to love what you do.

If you choose to be an actor, musician make sure you become educated in your craft.

Study and Practice every day,not just the creative end, but the business end as well.

And most important…
It is a difficult business at best… and if you are able to make a living at it – you have succeeded.

Always have a back up plan, find a great support network of friends and family… and of course, never stop believing in yourself and your talents and abilities.
